A successful alliance between government and private enterprise saw the reconstructed fishway at Loudoun Weir opened for the start of Native Fish Awareness Week.

The Week celebrates healthy river systems and the Loudoun Weir fishway project is supporting fish conservation.

Condamine Alliance CEO Phil McCullough said the fishway launch was also a celebration of partnerships as all levels of government joined corporate sponsors to complete the project.

Mr McCullough thanked civil construction company Ostwald Bros for becoming the first corporate investor of a fishway in Australia.

“Without the support of Ostwald Bros this wouldn’t have happened. Their contribution is an outstanding example of corporate support.”

Ostwald Bros general manager Matthew Ostwald said: “Water is a valuable resource and retaining healthy rivers is a priority for regional areas so we were happy to be able to play a part in this project.

“As a locally based business we were pleased to lend our civil construction expertise to a project that benefits the community as well as the environment.

“Thanks must go to our staff for seeing it through. They have to be commended for bringing this project forward to completion.”

The fish friendly project, initiated by Condamine Alliance, links in with a broader national strategy that aims to substantially increase native fish populations.
